Europe’s only dry reef, the Steinplatte in Waidring , is one of the best climbing areas in Tyrol and Salzburg. Climbing legends such as Markus Bendler, Chris Sharma and the Huber brothers regularly tackle the 7-kilometre-long rock faces that stretch all the way to Lofer. Via ferratas and climbing areas for beginners and families can be found on the Steinplatte, as well as sport climbing routes and multi-pitch routes. The red gondolas of the Steinplatte Waidring mountain railways take you from the Bio Chalets Alpegg to the s’Schuasta Gangl via ferrata (C/D) in just a few minutes, to the Wintergarten climbing area for beginners and advanced climbers, as well as to numerous sport climbing routes and multi-pitch routes. If the weather is too wet for walking, you’re welcome to head to the nearby Familienland Pillersee climbing centre in St. Jakob in Haus, the felsen.fest in Saalfelden, or the St. Johann in Tirol bouldering centre.
During the two-day free camps, the SAAC mountain guides explain the essentials of belaying, abseiling, climbing and so on. Any climber with a sport climbing ability of at least UIAA grades 4 to 5 can take part.
