Traditions, Customs & Festivals in the Pillerseetal

The Pillerseetal in Tyrol is not only known for its stunning alpine scenery but also for its living traditions and festivals that have been passed down through generations. Anyone spending a holiday here experiences not only the beauty of the mountains, but also an authentic part of Tyrolean culture.

Why Tyrolean Traditions Are So Fascinating
Tyrolean customs are far more than folklore – they are an important part of the region’s identity. Seasonal celebrations, religious rituals and rural traditions have their roots in centuries-old history. They bring communities together, preserve a sense of belonging and mark the rhythm of the year. For visitors, they offer a unique window into real Tyrolean life.

Tyrolean Carnival (Fasnacht)

In many regions of Tyrol, winter is driven away with colorful parades, traditional masks and figures from myth and legend. Characters such as the “Klötzler,” “Tuxer,” or “Sackner” represent ancient traditions that have been kept alive for centuries.

Perchten, Krampus & Devil Runs

Spectacular and sometimes a little frightening: figures such as Krampus or Perchten roam through the villages during Advent. Their noisy parades symbolically chase away dark spirits and old winter fears – a powerful and unforgettable experience during the Advent season and the Rauhnächte.

Christmas “Anklöckeln”

During the Advent weeks, groups walk from house to house singing traditional songs and bringing Christmas blessings.
This custom is still lovingly preserved in villages like Waidring and Fieberbrunn.

Star Singers (Epiphany Tradition)
At the beginning of each year, children dressed as the Three Wise Men go from house to house.
They write the traditional blessing above the door: “20*C+M+B+year.”
This centuries-old tradition is part of the Epiphany celebrations across Austria.

Easter Fires

On Holy Saturday, large Easter fires are lit throughout the valley.
They symbolize resurrection, hope and light.
The fires are especially impressive when seen from the hills and mountain slopes surrounding the valley.

Midsummer & Sacred Heart Fires

In mid-June, large midsummer bonfires are lit on the mountains. Some are arranged in the shapes of hearts or crosses.
At the end of June, the famous Sacred Heart fires follow – a Tyrolean vow tradition that creates spectacular glowing patterns on the mountainsides.

Almabtrieb (Autumn Cattle Drive)

One of the most beloved traditions of the year: when the cows return from the alpine pastures in autumn, they are decorated with flowers, ribbons and large bells.
The villages celebrate with traditional music, dancing and regional food.
The celebrations are particularly atmospheric in St. Ulrich am Pillersee and Waidring.

Traditional Crafts & Folk Art

Wood carving, traditional costumes, handmade jewelry and local workshops keep old crafts alive.
Visitors can often watch artisans at work or even try some of these traditional techniques themselves.

Autumn Harvest & Culinary Festival

Autumn brings many harvest and food festivals celebrating local products such as cheese, fruit and vegetables.
Farmers’ markets and culinary events invite visitors to taste regional specialties. Many Almabtrieb celebrations are also combined with music, local bread and traditional dishes.
